Professor Hyunbeom Kim’s research team from the Department of Embedded Systems Engineering at Incheon National University (President: Injae Lee, hereinafter referred to as “INU”), in collaboration with a research team from the Mohamed Bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) in the UAE, recently announced a study on a real-time security surveillance system using resource-efficient resting drones.

Unlike conventional drones, resting drones are designed to attach and detach from surfaces such as streetlight poles, traffic signals, and building walls in order to minimize resource consumption when idle. This study proposes a real-time surveillance framework utilizing resting drones and evaluates its practical performance through the implementation of a working prototype, an energy-efficient deployment strategy, and a flight path design that incorporates resting capabilities.
The initial model of the resting drone-based monitoring system developed by the research team is expected to contribute to the future realization of an integrated network management system linked with urban mobility services.
This research was supported by the Ministry of Science and ICT through the ICT Master’s-Integrated Core Talent Development Program, funded by the Institute of Information & Communications Technology Planning & Evaluation (IITP). The study is scheduled for publication in the IEEE Internet of Things Journal (Impact Factor: 8.9), a top-tier journal in the field of computer science and information systems (Top 5% in 2024 JCR).
